A History of New York The complete title of this book was originally A History of New-York from the Beginning of the World to the End of the Dutch Dynasty, by Diedrich Knickerbocker. The inimitable Washington Irving penned it in 1809 as a satire of contemporary politics and contemporary history. Now considered to be a foundational work in the canon of New York literature, this book is a marvelous example of Irving’s keen wit, and one of the first in a long line of books exposing the social foibles of the city. This 1960s edition is in lovely condition, slightly yellowed and worn, adding to the historical import and character of the work.
