This volume was printed at the turn of the 20th century and presents a large number
of exaggerated German illustrations featuring women. Many of these cartoons, jokes
and comics were originally published at the time in newspapers or in popular culture
where, naturally, ideas of femininity, sex and German societal stereotypes were called
into question or perpetuated with humorous visual devices. A large portion of these
images are erotic in nature and some stretch all the way back to the 16th century. One
of the many Art Nouveau illustrations included is the embossed cover illustration by
the renowned Ferdinand von Rezniček, whose simple, equine lines fi ll the form of an
idealized modern woman who grasps a miniature Venus in her hand.
