Lost New York Lost New York

Title: Lost New York
Author: Nathan Silver
Publisher: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1967

Text by Nathan Silver; 242 pages, black and white illustrations

Borne of the mourning experienced by New Yorkers after the destruction of Penn Station in 1963, Lost New York is a mix of rare photographs from the city’s lost landmarks and landscapes. Compiled by architect and critic Nathan Silver, this volume romanticizes the curious mix of grandeur and grit that has defined the city in every era. Accompanied by pithy yet historically minded commentary, Lost New York is comprised of over 200 photographs and line drawings of public buildings, private spaces, and monuments all lost to developmental projects. From “Private Gathering Places” to “The New York Row House,” Silver was careful to include images from Luna Park, Madison Square Garden, and the pedestrian mall that lined Park Avenue in the 1920s.
