Alexey Brodovitch was one of the most influential figures in interwar and postwar American design. As the art director at Harper’s Bazaar he determined the elegant, yet energetic, path the magazine would take throughout the course of the century. In so doing, he imbued the minds of his readers with a taste for the modern aesthetic by way of the fashion world and carefully selected photographs by Cartier-Bresson, Brassai, Avedon, and Penn. This volume highlights his life and work as a graphic designer, tastemaker, and teacher through interviews, essays, photographic portraits and vivid color reproductions of some of Brodovitch’s most iconic layouts.
